⛏ COAL SUPPLY/DEMAND Demand Surge Outpaces Supply, Straining Inventories IMMEDIATE

Domestic Supply Signal

Bearish. A reported 9.3% fall in domestic coal output signals significant production-side constraints. Efforts by major producers to increase dispatches are being negated by the sheer scale of the demand surge, tightening overall availability.

Import Volume Signal

Mixed. While depleted domestic stocks necessitate higher import volumes for blending, the increasing economic viability of gas-fired power for peaking is setting a price ceiling on imported coal, potentially capping the upside for import volumes.

Power Sector Demand

Very Bullish. A 9% rise in power consumption, driven by high temperatures and poor renewable generation, has led to what is described as "unprecedented" demand for thermal power, pushing coal-based generation to its limits.

Industrial Demand

Stable. No specific signals on non-power sector demand from steel or cement were found, but the overarching theme of strong economic activity suggests demand remains firm, adding to the competition for spot market tonnes.

E-AUCTION & SPOT PREMIUM ANALYSIS

Market dynamics have decisively shifted in favor of coal producers, creating strong upward pressure on e-auction and spot market premiums. The confluence of surging power sector offtake and a simultaneous contraction in domestic coal production has created a significant supply deficit. Power generation companies with insufficient linkage material are being forced into the spot market to maintain plant operations, intensifying bidding competition. This desperation for tonnes suggests that premiums over the CIL notified price are expanding substantially. The market is signaling a clear scarcity premium, reflecting the widening gap between inelastic near-term demand and constrained supply, giving sellers significant pricing power in non-regulated sales channels.

COAL STOCKPILE & SECURITY SIGNAL

Coal inventory levels at power plants represent a growing concern for grid stability. Current stockpiles stand at 42 million tonnes, a level confirmed to be lower than the corresponding period last year. This depletion is occurring precisely when consumption is surging, indicating that the inventory buffer is eroding rapidly. The declining stock-to-consumption ratio points to a heightened risk of plants hitting critically low inventory levels, particularly if the dual pressures of high demand and lagging domestic output persist. The system's ability to absorb further shocks, such as transport bottlenecks or unexpected demand spikes, is diminishing, elevating near-term supply security risks.

IMPORT PARITY GAP

The arbitrage between domestic and imported coal is narrowing, making imports more economically attractive, particularly for coastal power plants. As fierce competition for limited domestic spot supply drives up e-auction premiums, the landed cost of domestic coal is rising. Concurrently, the grid's preference for gas-fired generation over coal for peak load management implies that the marginal cost of imported coal power is breaching the price of gas-based power. Given that global energy benchmarks like Brent are reported to be falling, the cost ceiling set by gas is likely decreasing, further squeezing the competitiveness of high-cost imported coal and, by extension, expensive domestic spot coal. This dynamic limits the upside for domestic premiums and incentivizes a shift to imports where logistically and economically feasible.

Thermal Power Spreads & Margins — POWER SPREADS

⚡ THERMAL SPREAD INTEL Derived dark spread and variable cost recovery signals for thermal generators IMMEDIATE

Dark Spread Signal

COMPRESSING. A surge in power consumption, noted at 9%, is colliding with a reported 9.3% drop in domestic coal production. This supply-demand imbalance is eroding dark spreads for non-integrated generators, as rising fuel procurement costs are likely to outpace tariff increases under regulated PPAs.

Variable Cost Recovery

STRAINED. The grid operator's increasing reliance on gas-fired generation to meet demand surges indicates that the variable costs for marginal coal-based power are rising sharply. While baseload units with secure fuel may be recovering costs, merchant tariffs are likely tracking higher-cost gas peakers, signaling a tight market.

Capacity Utilisation Signal

RISING. The significant increase in power demand directly translates to higher Plant Load Factors (PLFs) across the thermal fleet. Long-term investment signals, such as a major conglomerate's plan for 45 GW of new thermal capacity, confirm the market's expectation of sustained high utilisation.

Fuel Cost Pass-Through

UNCERTAIN. Generators with long-term PPAs face margin risk as spot coal prices increase ahead of regulatory approvals for fuel cost pass-through. The lag between cost incurrence and tariff revision remains a key variable for profitability in the regulated segment of the market.

Merchant Power Premium vs. Regulated Tariffs

The current market dynamics, characterized by a 9% rise in power demand against a 9.3% fall in coal output, are creating a significant premium for merchant power. As coal inventories at power stations are reportedly pressured at around 42 million tonnes, generators with un-contracted capacity are positioned to capture high spot prices on the exchanges. This widens the economic gap between merchant sales and long-term regulated tariffs, where revenue is constrained by fixed PPA rates. The grid operator's decision to dispatch more expensive gas-based power to maintain stability further underscores the high price environment for short-term and ancillary power, reinforcing the incentive for merchant generation. While this provides a strong short-term revenue signal, substantial new capex announcements for thermal capacity indicate that developers continue to underwrite long-term investments on the basis of a blended portfolio that includes the security of regulated PPAs alongside opportunistic merchant exposure.

Demand-Side Market Drivers

A confluence of factors is driving power demand and tightening the supply-demand balance. An immediate 9% surge in power consumption, coupled with a sub-par monsoon outlook, is intensifying agricultural and cooling demand, which in turn elevates the system-wide requirement for power. This is forcing the grid operator to turn to gas-fired peaker plants to ensure grid stability, a clear sign of system stress. Structurally, a new demand vector is emerging from the rapid expansion of data centres. Projections indicate that the energy consumption from these facilities, driven by the growth of artificial intelligence, could more than double by 2030. This creates a long-term, inelastic demand for reliable, round-the-clock power, underpinning the need for significant investment in baseload generation, including major plans for new thermal and nuclear capacity additions by private players.

Fuel Supply and Asset Viability Risk

The primary operational risk for thermal generators is shifting to fuel security. With domestic coal production declining and power plant inventories under pressure at the onset of the monsoon, units lacking captive mines or firm Fuel Supply Agreements (FSAs) face a heightened risk of fuel starvation or being forced to procure coal at elevated e-auction or import prices. This dynamic directly threatens the viability of assets tied to fixed-tariff PPAs, where the inability to pass on higher fuel costs can lead to negative operating margins and forced outages, reducing plant load factors. Conversely, the de-escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East has led to a moderation in global crude prices, which may provide some relief by capping the landed cost of imported coal. Nonetheless, the most significant near-term risk for thermal assets is domestic fuel availability, not a lack of power demand.

Battery/Storage Cost Signal

No direct signals on battery or energy storage system (BESS) cost trajectories were present in the analyzed materials.

IRR/Margin Signal

Inferred margins for RE projects are under pressure from both sides: rising grid integration challenges (curtailment risk) and a continued strong position of thermal power in the merit order limit the upside on power prices.

CAPACITY ADDITION PIPELINE

The energy capacity pipeline is dominated by substantial capital expenditure plans from large industrial groups, notably the Adani conglomerate, which is pursuing a balanced strategy including significant investments in both thermal (45 GW) and nuclear (10 GW) power. This indicates a strong long-term outlook for firm, dispatchable power. On the demand side, a massive scale-up in data center capacity, highlighted by Yotta's $7 billion capex plan, is creating a new class of high-volume, round-the-clock energy consumers. This concentrated demand is expected to be a primary driver for new renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs), likely bundled with storage or other firming solutions to meet 24/7 power requirements. Concurrently, government-led industrial policy in regions like Gujarat is fostering a domestic manufacturing ecosystem for critical RE components, including electronics and electrical equipment, aiming to strengthen the supply chain for this expanding pipeline.

GRID INTEGRATION SIGNAL

Grid integration is emerging as a significant operational challenge for the expanding renewable energy fleet. The system operator's increasing turn towards gas-based power for grid balancing and flexibility is a direct indicator of the difficulties in managing the intermittency of solar and wind generation. This reliance on fossil-fuel-based flexible generation suggests that the grid lacks sufficient storage or other non-thermal balancing resources. As a result, intermittent RE projects face a heightened risk of curtailment, particularly during periods of high generation and low demand, which could negatively impact project revenues and investor returns. This systemic need for firming capacity will likely drive demand for energy storage solutions and create new revenue streams through ancillary service markets.

RE vs THERMAL MERIT ORDER

Thermal power continues to hold a commanding position in the merit order dispatch stack, driven by robust electricity demand. The maintenance of healthy coal stock levels at power plants, reported at 42 million tonnes, despite a surge in demand, underscores the system's reliance on coal for baseload generation. While solar provides competitive daytime power, it is not yet displacing coal for firm, round-the-clock supply. The long-term strategic commitment to thermal and nuclear power, evidenced by large-scale private sector investment plans for 45 GW of new coal and 10 GW of new nuclear capacity, signals that these firm power sources will continue to set the marginal price of electricity during non-solar hours for the foreseeable future. Consequently, renewable energy's primary role remains supplementary, displacing some thermal generation during the day but not yet fundamentally altering the core economics of baseload power supply.

⚠ STRANDED ASSET SIGNALS Gas Peakers Threaten Coal Baseload as Grid Seeks Flexibility NEAR-TERM RISK

Thermal Fleet at Risk

Grid India's increasing reliance on gas-fired power to manage intermittency points to coal's inflexibility. This shift in the merit order threatens the plant load factors (PLFs) of thermal assets, particularly those unable to provide rapid ramping and ancillary services, increasing their risk of becoming stranded during periods of high renewable generation.

Coal Supply & Stock Risk

A reported 9.3% fall in coal output alongside a 9% rise in power demand has left coal stocks at power plants at a strained 42 million tonnes. This tight supply situation exposes coal plants to fuel availability risk and price volatility, further eroding their competitiveness against alternative generation sources.

Debt/Refinancing Risk

While Adani's plan to finance 45 GW of new thermal capacity suggests domestic capital remains available for coal projects, this creates a future risk cliff. A large-scale build-out of new coal assets locks in carbon-intensive infrastructure that will face immense refinancing pressure as global and domestic transition policies tighten, potentially creating a new wave of stranded assets post-2030.

Regulatory Protection Signal

The significant private sector investment flowing into new thermal capacity indicates a strong expectation of continued regulatory support, including long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and favorable capacity charge mechanisms. This provides a near-term hedge for existing assets but does not mitigate long-term transition risk driven by fuel costs and environmental compliance.

Carbon Price & Compliance Signals

The provided documents contain no specific or actionable intelligence regarding India's carbon pricing mechanisms, including the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme, the domestic compliance carbon market (ICM), or pricing trends for carbon credits. The analysis is therefore silent on this dimension.

Green Hydrogen & Emerging Transition Plays

Nascent but tangible signals for a green hydrogen economy are emerging. The development of Central Gujarat as an industrial hub includes a specific focus on creating a green hydrogen ecosystem, indicating state-level policy support for building out supply-side infrastructure. On the demand side, a landmark order for a methanol-powered dual-fuel vessel by a state-owned shipyard provides an early, concrete offtake signal for hydrogen derivatives in the maritime sector. However, the analysis reveals no data on production costs, electrolyser capacity deployment, or the economic viability of these emerging pathways, suggesting the sector remains in a pre-commercial, ecosystem-building phase.

Policy Catalyst Timeline

Several policy and regulatory catalysts are poised to shape the energy transition in the near term. Grid India's operational shift towards increased reliance on gas-based power signals an imminent change in grid management protocols and is likely to be reflected in upcoming planning documents from the Central Electricity Authority. The government's active push for ethanol blending, with a clear roadmap from E20 to E85, continues to be a primary policy driver altering the transport fuel mix. In the electric mobility space, the introduction of energy-efficiency star ratings for e-scooters is a near-term catalyst aimed at standardizing performance and boosting consumer confidence. Most significantly, Adani Group's announced entry into nuclear power generation signals a major strategic opening of the sector to private capital, a long-term policy shift with immediate investment implications.

🔵 GAS NETBACK INTEL LNG vs domestic gas netback and downstream margin signals IMMEDIATE

LNG vs APM Netback Gap

The significant drop in Brent crude futures narrows the price gap between imported LNG and domestic gas, enhancing LNG's attractiveness for industrial consumers capable of feedstock switching.

CGD Margin Signal

City gas distributors using a blend of APM and imported LNG will see margins improve as the cost of their imported tranche falls, while retail CNG/PNG prices remain sticky.

Gas-to-Power Spread

Lower gas prices, coupled with surging power demand and below-target coal inventories at power plants, improve the economics for gas-fired generation, positioning it for higher merit order dispatch.

Industrial Gas Demand Signal

A lower landed cost for LNG incentivizes higher offtake from price-sensitive sectors like petrochemicals, refineries, and steel, which may switch from more expensive liquid fuels.

LNG REGASIFICATION & INFRASTRUCTURE

The strategic pivot towards gas-based power generation, underscored by Adani Group's major investment plans and the grid operator's increasing reliance on gas, signals a substantial demand-pull for LNG that will test India's existing import infrastructure. The planned ₹2 trillion capex by Adani Power, including entry into nuclear and a focus on gas, necessitates a corresponding expansion in LNG regasification capacity and downstream pipeline networks to ensure fuel security for these new assets. While port logistics at hubs like Mundra are reportedly easing, the core challenge remains scaling up terminal capacity and inland connectivity to match the pace of power sector demand growth.

Current documents suggest a policy environment increasingly favourable to gas, driven by the need for grid balancing and reliability amid rising power consumption. However, the physical infrastructure to support this pivot requires significant lead time and investment. The market is signalling a long-term structural demand for LNG, which will place a premium on companies with integrated value chains, from LNG sourcing and regasification terminals to pipeline distribution and power generation offtake.

DOMESTIC GAS PRODUCTION TRAJECTORY

The outlook for domestic gas production appears muted in the provided intelligence, with no new announcements of significant discoveries or production ramp-ups from key basins like KG-D6. The narrative is dominated by the demand side of the equation, particularly the power sector's growing appetite for gas as a cleaner, more flexible alternative to coal. Adani's major foray into gas-fired and nuclear power, alongside Grid India's turn to gas for grid stability, creates a structural demand deficit that domestic production, at its current trajectory, is unlikely to fill.

This imbalance points to a deepening of India's LNG import dependency over the medium to long term. While government policy is clearly engineering a demand shift towards gas, the corresponding supply-side response from domestic exploration and production is not evident in these reports. Consequently, the long-term energy security strategy will lean heavily on securing competitive and reliable LNG supply chains, reinforcing the critical role of international sourcing and import infrastructure in India's energy transition.

STRONG: Direct, high-impact linkage evident in today's data.
POSITIVE: Supportive influence or positive correlation.
NEGATIVE: Headwind or negative correlation.
NEUTRAL: Minimal or indirect relationship observed.

Today's signals reveal a powerful feedback loop where surging power demand, partly driven by new data centers, is tightening the entire value chain. This is boosting thermal margins and merchant tariffs, even as falling domestic coal output introduces a key risk to fuel costs. The most critical emerging dependency is the grid's growing reliance on expensive gas-fired power to balance renewable intermittency, creating a new structural demand driver for gas and a significant input for grid infrastructure capex.

LINKAGE SIGNAL #1 — POWER DEMAND → THERMAL MARGIN

STRENGTH: STRONG | DIRECTION: POSITIVE

Multiple reports cite a 9% year-on-year increase in power demand, leading to surging offtake requirements from thermal power plants.
Comfortable coal stock levels at 42 MT are being tested by this high demand, creating opportunities for generators to maximize output and sell surplus power on the merchant market at higher prices.

The sustained high demand is directly lifting thermal plant load factors (PLFs) and increasing the price for non-contracted power. This improves the profitability outlook for thermal generators, especially those with merchant capacity. The model should factor in higher average realization for thermal assets.

MODEL INPUT: ↑ THERMAL PLF SENSITIVITY: MERCHANT TARIFF REALIZATION

LINKAGE SIGNAL #2 — RENEWABLE ADDITION → GAS NETBACK

STRENGTH: STRONG | DIRECTION: POSITIVE

An FE/IE article explicitly states Grid India is turning to more gas-based power specifically to provide grid balancing services to counter the intermittency of renewable energy.
This creates a structural, non-seasonal source of demand for gas in the power sector, which was previously used more for peaking power.

This is a fundamental shift. Renewable capacity growth now has a direct, positive impact on the demand for natural gas, supporting gas prices (netbacks) and improving the viability of gas-fired power plants. Gas is no longer just a peaking fuel but a core grid-stabilizing asset. D/S/P models must now link RE capacity forecasts directly to gas demand forecasts.

MODEL INPUT: LINK RE CAPACITY TO GAS DEMAND SENSITIVITY: GRID BALANCING REQUIREMENTS

LINKAGE SIGNAL #3 — FINANCING/DFI → CAPEX FLOW

STRENGTH: STRONG | DIRECTION: POSITIVE

The RBI Governor stated that talk of an interest rate hike is "premature," signaling a stable or potentially easing cost of capital environment. Bond yields have subsequently fallen.
Adani Power announced a massive ₹2 trillion capex plan over five years for thermal and nuclear expansion, while DFIs like Sidbi and Nabard are seeking $2 billion in low-cost foreign loans.

The combination of a dovish central bank and proactive financing measures from Development Financial Institutions creates a highly favorable environment for capital-intensive energy projects. This de-risks financing for large capex cycles like Adani's, making their ambitious targets more achievable and accelerating capacity additions.

LINKAGE SIGNAL #4 — COAL SUPPLY → THERMAL MARGIN

STRENGTH: STRONG | DIRECTION: NEGATIVE

Multiple sources report that while power demand is up 9%, domestic coal output has fallen by 9.3%.
Though current coal stocks are at a comfortable 42 MT for the monsoon, this supply-demand divergence puts significant pressure on the e-auction market, where non-PPA plants source their fuel.

This is the most significant risk to thermal profitability. While high demand is a positive, the inability of domestic supply to keep pace could lead to a sharp spike in e-auction premiums, compressing margins for merchant power producers. The model must stress-test margins against a range of higher domestic coal prices.

DIMENSION 3 — CROSS-SECTOR ENERGY THEMES

1. A Widening Power Deficit Forcing Unconventional Supply Responses: A clear theme across the documents is the growing strain on India's power grid. Surging electricity demand, up 9% year-on-year in June due to heatwaves, is colliding with a constrained coal supply, evidenced by declining power plant inventories and a dip in domestic production. This has created a supply deficit that is pushing the system operator, Grid India, to take emergency measures, most notably the plan to revive 9 GW of long-stranded gas-based power plants. This indicates that the grid's buffer capacity is exhausted, forcing a pragmatic turn to all available generation sources, regardless of cost, to prevent widespread outages. This environment of scarcity is set to keep merchant power tariffs firm, benefiting generators with flexible capacity while pressuring distribution utilities.

2. The Dawn of a Private Capex Supercycle in Energy: The reports are heavily weighted with announcements of massive, multi-decade capital expenditure plans, particularly from the Adani Group. The conglomerate's ambition to invest ₹2 trillion in thermal power (targeting 45 GW), develop 10 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035, and build a 3 GW data center platform signals a paradigm shift. It marks the revival of large-scale private sector investment in conventional energy sectors, including a landmark entry into the state-dominated nuclear field. This private-led capex supercycle, extending beyond renewables, will be a primary driver of India's long-term energy supply growth but also underscores the immense and growing capital intensity of the sector.

3. Energy Security Policy Navigates Geopolitical and Transition Crosscurrents: The government's energy policy is being pulled in multiple directions. The aggressive push for higher ethanol blending (E20, E85) highlights a continued strategic focus on reducing crude oil import dependency. Simultaneously, the volatility in global energy markets, where crude prices have eased on a fragile Mideast truce but are forecast to remain firm, reinforces the imperative for domestic energy security. This complex backdrop explains the dual-track approach of both accelerating the green transition (biofuels, renewables for data centers) and shoring up domestic fossil fuel availability (reviving gas plants, long-term coal capacity planning).

Conduct a consumer survey targeting potential e-scooter buyers to run a conjoint analysis, testing preferences and willingness-to-pay for different combinations of star ratings, upfront price, and claimed range. Model the impact on national EV adoption forecasts published by NITI Aayog.

The documents reveal a simultaneous capex push into both thermal power and highly energy-intensive data centres. To what extent do current grid expansion plans and renewable energy auction timelines account for this compounded electricity demand? Is there a projected shortfall in green energy supply that necessitates the parallel expansion of thermal capacity, and what does this imply for India's 2030 non-fossil fuel targets?

Review the National Electricity Plan (NEP) and transmission planning documents from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Cross-reference projected demand with announced industrial capex plans that may not be fully factored into baseline projections.

The government's reversal on the 20% local sourcing rule for satellite equipment highlights policy unpredictability. How does this precedent affect the investment risk assessment for domestic manufacturers in the energy and technology supply chains? What risk premium are investors now likely to apply to future "Make in India" policy announcements?

Conduct off-the-record interviews with executives at domestic manufacturing firms and PE investors to gauge their reaction and changed investment criteria. Analyze the stock price performance of listed domestic telecom/energy equipment manufacturers following the policy announcement.

Top 5 Energy Fundamental Insights — ANALYST PICKS

INSIGHT #1 — COMMODITY PRICE SHOCK

Crude Price Collapse to Multi-Month Lows Signals Gas Cost Relief, Easing Inflationary Pressure

What: Multiple reports indicate Brent crude has fallen to its lowest level since February, a direct consequence of a US-Iran truce that is expected to secure maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz. While some analysts see a floor around $80-90, the immediate price action is decisively bearish.
Why it matters for D/S/P model: Lower crude prices directly reduce the input cost for gas-based power generators and industrial consumers by pulling down linked LNG and domestic gas prices. This eases variable costs for gas plants and improves margins for gas utilities, while also tempering headline inflation.
Model action: Revise DOWN near-term crude and LNG price deck assumptions. Model an upside scenario for gas power plant PLFs and spreads, assuming lower fuel costs translate to improved merit order positioning.

INSIGHT #2 — THERMAL SPREAD

Domestic Coal Deficit Deepens as Demand Outpaces Production, Signaling Sustained Upside for Merchant Power Tariffs

What: News reports highlight a critical divergence in the domestic energy market, with power demand growing by 5% while coal production has declined by over 9%. This has led to a surge in demand for coal stocks at power plants, which are now reported at 42 MT.
Why it matters for D/S/P model: The widening supply-demand gap points to persistent tightness in the domestic coal market. This will force thermal generators to increase their blend of more expensive imported coal or pay higher premiums in e-auctions, driving up the market clearing price for merchant power.
Model action: Revise UP near-term merchant power tariff forecasts. Increase the variable cost assumption for non-SCA thermal plants to reflect a higher blended fuel cost, which will support higher dark spreads.

INSIGHT #3 — STRUCTURAL DEMAND SHIFT

AI-Driven Data Center Boom Crystallizes as a New, High-Load Power Demand Driver, Straining Grid and Resources

What: A consistent theme across publications is the rapid proliferation of data centers to support the AI boom, with states competing to attract investment. Analysis suggests this creates a new category of high-intensity, 24/7 electricity demand that is also constrained by the availability of land, water, and resilient power infrastructure.
Why it matters for D/S/P model: This represents a structural, step-change in long-term electricity demand forecasts that is not fully captured by extrapolating past C&I growth. The high, non-variable load factor of data centers requires significant new investment in firm, reliable power capacity and grid strengthening.
Model action: Add a new, dedicated demand segment for "Data Centers/AI" in long-term forecasts with a higher growth trajectory and load factor than the general industrial category. Stress test grid stability and peak power assumptions under a high-AI-penetration scenario.

INSIGHT #4 — LONG-TERM SUPPLY STACK

Private Sector Enters Nuclear Generation, Signaling a Major Structural Shift in the Long-Term Clean Firm Capacity Mix

What: Adani Power has articulated a significant capital expenditure plan that includes a target to develop 10 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2035. This marks the first major private-sector foray into a segment historically dominated by government-owned enterprises.
Why it matters for D/S/P model: This introduces a new, large-scale source of carbon-free, firm (non-intermittent) power into long-term supply models. It provides a viable alternative to coal for meeting baseload demand and offers a crucial complement to the growth of intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
Model action: Incorporate a "Private Nuclear" capacity tranche into the long-term (post-2030) supply build-out scenario. Revise DOWN the required new-build coal capacity in the long-term to meet baseload demand, assuming successful execution of the private nuclear plan.

INSIGHT #5 — DEMAND-SIDE TRANSITION

Energy Transition Broadens to Mobility and Industry, Accelerating Electrification and Alternative Fuel Adoption

What: Several reports confirm that the energy transition is expanding beyond the power grid. Key signals include new energy efficiency ratings for e-scooters, pilot programs for electric auto-rickshaw ride-hailing, and the development of ships designed to run on methanol dual-fuel.
Why it matters for D/S/P model: These trends point to an acceleration in the electrification of transport and the adoption of alternative fuels in hard-to-abate sectors. This will create new pockets of electricity demand while also beginning to structurally displace demand for conventional liquid fuels like diesel and fuel oil.
Model action: Revise UP long-term EV penetration rate assumptions used in the electricity demand forecast. Create a new scenario to model the displacement of a portion of marine fuel oil demand by alternative fuels like methanol post-2030.

ENERGY MARKET FUNDAMENTAL VERDICT

D/S/P model verdict in 3 sentences: The energy market presents conflicting near-term signals, with a bearish international crude price environment easing gas costs while a severe domestic coal deficit is set to elevate merchant power tariffs. Structurally, an under-modeled surge in power demand from AI and data centers is emerging as the central long-term theme, creating significant upside risk to load forecasts. The single most critical model action is to build a separate, high-growth demand scenario for data centers, as their 24/7 load profile will fundamentally reshape grid requirements and capacity planning for the next decade.
