A new trend of fine-tuning low-cost AI models with proprietary corporate data is threatening the business models of leading labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. Investment firm Bridgewater Associates, in partnership with Thinking Machines Lab, developed a bespoke model using a cheap Chinese base that outperformed frontier models by 30% on its internal tasks, at just one-fourteenth of the cost. This approach, which embeds a firm's unique expertise, suggests companies may increasingly opt for cheaper, customized AI solutions over expensive, general-purpose frontier models.
