Education — UK YOUTH INCREASINGLY OPT FOR APPRENTICESHIPS OVER UNIVERSITY TO AVOID DEBT

A growing number of young people in the UK are choosing apprenticeships over traditional university degrees to avoid accumulating substantial debt. The higher education participation rate fell to 36.3% in 2025 from a 2021 peak of 38.2%, as students face average debts of £50,000 for a degree. In contrast, degree apprenticeships, such as a four-year program with the Ministry of Defence, offer a salary (around £30,000 annually) and cover tuition fees, providing a debt-free path to a career.
