Indian solar industry pushes for battery storage integration in rooftop scheme

India's solar industry is advocating for the integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) into the government's flagship rooftop solar program, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Proponents argue that adding storage would boost self-consumption, reduce grid dependency, and lower consumer electricity bills. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is currently holding stakeholder consultations on the proposal, which could require additional capital support to offset higher upfront costs for consumers.
